Platelet rich plasma therapy is an exciting technology to help maximize tissue healing and growth. The concept has been in existence for over 40 years and is used in Orthopedic and Dental applications. It has been extensively studied in human and animal research for ligament, tendon, cartilage, bone, and skin repair and healing. In cosmetic dentistry is used for implant and reconstructive purposes.
The procedure is relatively simple. One vial of blood is taken from patient and put into a specific centrifuge apparatus. This separates plasma, red blood cells, and allows platelets to sit in a specific chamber in the centrifuge collector. Superficial plasma is removed allowing access to a dense rich platelet medium. This fraction is then drawn into a syringe and injected into specific sites.
Within platelet rich plasma there are seven specific growth factors or cytokines.
These include:
This technique also stimulate secretion of Hyaluronic acid and Hepatocyte growth factor. It creates an early and complete revascularization of connective tissue. It becomes a matrix or nutrient gradient for cells to migrate to. It has significant antibacterial effect.
It can be used in a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. It can significantly improve healing in any of the joints, cartilage, muscle, ligaments and tendons. It is an excellent technique to use along with Prolotherapy. Depending upon condition, it can be done once a month or for accelerated purposes once a week. A great deal of attention has been paid to platelet rich plasma recently because of use on high profile athletes and their injuries.
